When and Where to Look

  • When: Start checking about 3-6 weeks into the vegetative growth stage. The signs become very obvious a week or two after switching to a 12/12 light cycle for flowering.
  • Where: Look at the nodes of the plant—the junctions where a branch grows out from the main stem. The first signs, called “pre-flowers,” will appear here.

What to Look For

Female (♀) – The One You Keep

The first sign of a female plant is a small, teardrop-shaped green pod called a calyx (or bract). Soon after, two wispy white hairs (called pistils) will emerge from its tip.

  • Key Sign: Two white, wispy pistils.
  • Shape: Comes from a single, pointed green pod at the node.

Male (♂) – The One You Remove

A male plant develops small, round pollen sacs. They look like a tiny, hanging bunch of grapes and have no white hairs.

Shape: Round and hanging, similar to a tiny bunch of grapes.

Key Sign: A cluster of small, ball-like sacs.

Feminized seeds are bred to produce only female plants, which are the ones that create resin-rich buds. This is ideal for growers who want a streamlined process without needing to identify and remove male plants.

Regular seeds are the original, unaltered expression of cannabis genetics, producing either a male or female plant. These are perfect for breeders and growers who want to explore cannabis in its most authentic form.

Good seeds are worth protecting. If you’re not planting all of your seeds this season, here’s the simple way to keep them fresh and ready for your next grow.

The goal is to shield them from their enemies: light, moisture, and big temperature swings. Just remember three words: Cool, Dark, and Dry.

The Best Way to Store Them

Keep your seeds in their original pack or a small sealed container. To go the extra mile, toss in a silica packet (like the kind you find in vitamin bottles) to keep things extra dry.

Then, pick your spot:

  • A cool drawer (Good for 1-2 years): This is fine for any seeds you plan on using next season.
  • The fridge (Great for 2-5 years): This is the best option for most people. The steady, cool temperature keeps them stable and fresh.
  • The freezer (Best for 5+ years): For long-term storage, the freezer is the way to go. Just remember this key rule: When you take the container out, let it warm up to room temperature for a few hours before you open it. This stops moisture from getting on the cold seeds.

So, How Long Do They Really Last?

It all comes down to where you keep them. In a drawer, you’ll get a solid year or two. In the fridge, you’re looking at up to 5 years with good viability. In the freezer, properly stored seeds can last a decade or even longer.

Take care of your seeds, and they’ll be ready for you when you need them. Happy growing.
